Brief Biodata

Jan holds a PhD from Melbourne Law School and a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts (with a major in Philosophy), also from the University of Melbourne. His thesis, "Externalist Positivism: An Etiological Functionalist Account of Law", showed how recent work in the philosophy of language and metaphysics could be fruitfully used to open up new conceptual space in the classic positivist/anti-positivist debate in general jurisprudence. He developed an original, functionalist account of laws nature, drawing upon and extending non-intentional and non-moral notions of function and teleology found in new work in the philosophy of biology. In short, he suggested that laws nature is its function, which is a fact about the world to be discovered through empirical investigation.

When not writing and researching in general jurisprudence, Jan can be found thinking about autonomous algorithmic systems, recursive self-improvement, and virtue ethics; or else acting and making electronic music.
