Professor Michael Blakeney is a highly acclaimed academic at Universities in Australia and the United Kingdom.

Qualifications

Professor Blakeney is Herchel Smith Professor of Intellectual Property Law at Queen Mary, University of London and Director of the Queen Mary Intellectual Property Research Institute.

Biographical Details

Professor Blakeney's current research projects are in the fields of traditional knowledge and access to genetic resources and geographical indications.  He is writing a book for OUP on International IP Treaties.

International Experience

Professor Blakeney worked formerly in the Asia Pacific Bureau of the World Intellectual Property Organization.  His consultancy work has been in the fields of access to genetic resources and biotechnological patenting.  He has advised the FAO, and the international agricultural research centres of the Consulting Group for International Agricultural Research, including the International Rice Research Institute, International Centre for Living Resource Management, Centre for International Forestry Research, International Livestock Research Institute and International Service for National Agricultural Research on intellectual property management.

Professor Blakeney has published numerous articles.  The most recent include Innovation and SMEs (Europe Asia Patent Information Conference, September 2002), Legal Aspects of Biotechnology and Biodiversity: Intellectual Property Aspects (Biolaw 2002: Bridging the Gap between Scientific and Legal Worlds, Bangkok, September 2002) and IPRs and GMOs: Regulatory Issues of Genetically Modified Organisms (Maastricht University, 24-25 June, 2002).

He has written numerous chapters in books, including Intellectual Property Aspects of Traditional Agricultural Knowledge (in R.E.Evenson, V.Santaniello & D.Zilberman (Eds.), Economic and Social Issues in Agricultural Biotechnology, Oxford: CABI Publishing, 2002, 43-60); Intellectual Property in Agriculture (in L.O'Brien & R.J.Henry (Eds.), Transgenic Cereals, St Paul, Minnesota: AACC, 2001, 277-301) and Intellectual Property and Agriculture: The Issue of Biotechnology (in J.A.McMahon (Ed.), Trade & Agriculture: Negotiating a New Agreement? London: Cameron May, 2001, 349-379).  He is also General Editor of Perspectives on Intellectual Property (London: Sweet & Maxwell).  He is also a member of the Editorial Boards of International Trade Law, Regulation and Digital Technology Law Journal and Cyberspazio e Diritto - Cyberspace and Law.
