CBFL congratulates Dr David Fox on his appointment as Chair of Common Law at the University of Edinburgh from August 2017!
David Fox is a University Lecturer in the Faculty of Law and Fellow of St John’s College, in the University of Cambridge. He is a contributing editor of Snell’s Equity, and Ruoff and Roper, Registered Conveyancing.

David’s early interests in property, trusts and tracing led to a more general interest in the legal treatment of money. He is the author of Property Rights in Money (Oxford University Press, 2008), and in recent years has worked on a collaborative project with economists, banking lawyers and legal historians which will lead to the first history of western monetary law. The resulting book, David Fox and Wolfgang Ernst (eds), Money in the Western Legal Tradition, will be published by Oxford University Press later in 2015.

He was a Visiting Scholar at the Centre for Banking & Finance Law from 1 to 8 April 2015.

Christian Hofmann speaks at the Securities and Futures Commission of Hong Kong and University of Hong Kong, 21-22 September 2016
CBFL Exco Member Christian Hofmann gave a talk on Regulating non-bank financial intermediaries in Asia at the Securities and Futures Commission of Hong Kong on 21 September 2016 and University of Hong Kong on 22 September. He touched on the risks posed by growing volume of assets and transactions held and executed by non-banks (often referred to as 'other financial institutions' or OFIs for short) and discussed potential adequate responses to such risks.

The conference is hosted by the Asian Institute of International Financial Law of the University of Hong Kong and co-organised with the Centre for Financial Regulation and Economic Development of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the City University of Hong Kong, the Centre for Banking & Finance Law of the National University of Singapore and the Centre for Cross-Border Commercial Law in Asia of Singapore Management University.

CBFL is proud to be a co-organiser of the Annual Conference of the Journal of the Financial Regulation, 2016. With "Integration and Interconnectedness in Global Finance" as its theme, the conference seeks to explore a broad range of topics such as emerging risks to financial stability stemming from increasing integration and interconnectedness, the evolving role of international financial institutions, the development, role and effectiveness of regional institutions, and more. Han Yongqiang elected Council Member of the Chinese Insurance Law Association on 30 October 2015
CBFL Research Fellow Dr Yong Qiang HAN was nominated and elected in absentia on 30 Oct 2015 a Council Member of the Chinese Insurance Law Association, as a recognition of his acclaimed Chinese publications among others before 2014 on revisiting the principle of utmost good faith in English and Chinese insurance law, as well as his highly-expected ongoing Hart Publishing monograph project on the principle of policyholder's reasonable expectations in Anglo-American insurance law.

Yong Q Han joins the Drafting Committee of transnational research group 'Principles of Reinsurance Contract Law', August 2015
CBFL Researcher Dr Yong Q Han became a member of the Drafting Committee of international research group, 'Principles of Reinsurance Contract Law' (PRICL), in August 2015. This newly-launched research project is sponsored jointly by University of Zurich, University of Vienna, and University of Frankfurt am Main. Dr Han will attend the research group's first workshop at the University of Zurich in January 2016.

CBFL Adjunct Researcher Jodi Gardner presented research on consumer protection and moneylending at two conferences recently - the first on Trust and Empirical Evidence in Law Making and Legal Process conference at Oxford University on 19-20 June 2015 and the second at the International Association of Consumer Law conference in Amsterdam on 29 June to 1 July 2015.

Hans Tjio publishes new book on Corporate Law, October 2015
CBFL Co-Director Hans Tjio, together with Assoc Profs Pearlie Koh and Lee Pey Woan from the Singapore Management University, recently published a book on Corporate Law. The book is currently available in a PDF e-book version and the hard-copy version will be published by Academy Publishing in October 2015.

Dora Neo and Hans Tjio to speak at 33rd International Symposium on Economic Crime, 6-13 September 2015, Jesus College, University of Cambridge
CBFL Directors Dora Neo and Hans Tjio will speak at the 33rd International Symposium on Economic Crime taking place at Jesus College, University of Cambridge, from 6-13 September 2015. Dora Neo's presentation will examine the theme of 'The process of due diligence and its limitations in practical and legal terms' whilst Hans Tjio will focus on the theme of 'Managing the consequences of suspicion'.

Christian Hofmann speaks at the European Central Bank, 10 July 2015
CBFL Executive Committee member Prof Christian Hofmann spoke at the European Central Bank on 10 July 2015, Friday. Titled "The global coalition against G-SIBs", Prof Hofmann's presentation focused on the efforts of regulators in financial centres around the world to provide solutions for the risks stemming from G-SIBs. He also explored how transnational solutions may shape responsibilities of, and coordination and cooperation among regulators with respect to G-SIBs, using Singapore as an example.

Christian Hofmann to speak at London School of Economics Law and Economics Forum Seminar Series, 3 June 2015
CBFL Executive Committee member Christian Hofmann will be speaking at a seminar organised by the London School of Economics Law and Economics Forum on 3 June 2015. Titled "The global coalition against 'GSIBs' - Efforts to control the risks stemming from global systemically important banks", the seminar will discuss current regulatory reforms for systemically relevant banks, focusing on the efforts of financial centres around the globe to provide solutions for the risks stemming from globally operating banks, so-called 'GSIBs'.

Jodi Gardner speaks at Conference on Moneylending on 29 May 2015
CBFL Adjunct Researcher Jodi Gardner spoke as a panellist at the Conference on Moneylending on 29 May 2015. Organised by the Ministry of Law (MinLaw) and Institute of Policy Studies, the conference addressed recommendations put forth by MinLaw's Advisory Committee on Moneylending to strengthen the moneylending regulatory regime in Singapore. Mr K. Shanmugam, Minister for Law and Minister for Foreign Affairs graced the event, which was well-attended by about 100 representatives from moneylenders, volunteer work organisations and grassroots leaders.

CBFL Director, Dora Neo, spoke in the panel on 'Financing large scale infrastructure projects, are new models emerging?' at the 2nd Annual Symposium on EU-Asia Relations in Financial Services, Hong Kong, 27-29 May 2015. CBFL Adjunct Research Professor, Alexander Loke, spoke in another panel on 'Asset Management: Overcoming fragmentation in Asian markets'. This symposium is a by-invitation only event which brings together global, European and Asian policy makers, high-level regulators, leading academics and industry representatives to discuss important issues impacting the effective functioning of EU-Asian trade, investment and capital markets.

CBFL Executive Committee member Sandra Booysen spoke at the Asia Desk Forum held from 15 - 18 April 2015 at the University of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. She presented on the panel "Customers and the Duty to Examine Bank Statements" and chaired another panel on "Challenges Facing Banks in Asia". The latter also featured Drs Yvonne Wong and Chen Weitseng from CBFL, as well as Dr Aida Othman, Partner, Zaid Ibrahim & Co (Malaysia).

Three of CBFL's executive committee members (Assistant Professors Sandra Booysen, Weitseng Chen and Umakanth Varottil) will participate in this inaugural conference in Canada in April. Sandra has put together a panel that will speak about the challenges facing banks in Asia. She will discuss some of these challenges from the Singapore perspective while Weitseng will talk about China. The two other panellists will talk about Islamic banking in Malaysia and the development of a banking sector in Myanmar. Umakanth will run a workshop on doing business in India and join a panel where he will present on legal developments in India.

Jin Sheng publishes new book "China's Listed Companies: Conflicts, Governance and Regulation", March 2015
CBFL Adjunct Researcher Dr. Jin Sheng released her new book "China's Listed Companies: Conflicts, Governance and Regulation" in March 2015. In her book, Dr. Sheng uses a law and economics approach to analyse various types of pervasive misconduct of large shareholders in China's listed companies, and suggests concrete reform proposals toward effective protection of minority shareholders. Jonathan Lim was appointed a member of the Young Singapore International Arbitration Centre Committee, March 2015
CBFL Adjunct Researcher Jonathan Lim has been appointed as a member of the Young Singapore International Arbitration Centre (YSIAC) Committee. The YSIAC Committee consists of international arbitration practitioners aged 40 and below from around the world who have been appointed by the SIAC. The purpose of the YSIAC includes exchanging expertise, ideas and experience in international arbitration, promoting the use of international arbitration and facilitating a hands-on way to learn more about the SIAC as an institution and its arbitration rules and procedures. Umakanth Varottil to present a paper at the Conference on Independent Directors in Asia, 26-27 February 2015
CBFL Executive Committee member Umakanth Varottil will be presenting a paper at the Conference on Independent Directors in Asia to be organized at the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore on 26-27 February 2015. His paper (co-authored with Professor Vikramaditya Khanna of the University of Michigan Law School) deals with board independence in India.

CBFL Executive Committee member Umakanth Varottil will be speaking at the 2nd Conference of the EU Asia Corporate Governance Dialogue Series to be held on 24 February 2014 at the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore. He will be speaking on State-Owned Enterprises in India.

Sharon Craggs spoke at the 9th Gulf Cooperation Council Regulators Summit, Abu Dhabi, January 2015
CBFL Industry Fellow Sharon Craggs was invited to speak at the 9th Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Regulators Summit, Abu Dhabi, hosted by the Emirates Securities & Commodities Authority of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) under the patronage of the UAE Minister of Economy H.E Sultan Bin Saeed Al Mansouri, in January 2015. The GCC Regulatory Summit is the Middle East's leading forum for debate around topical issues facing the financial services industry. Speakers include regulators, subject matter experts and industry professionals from US, Europe, Asia as well as Middle East on key issues in the region including emerging regulatory trends, capital markets developments, corporate governance, information security, and anti-money laundering. About 800 participants attended the summit. Sharon's subject was Regulatory Considerations for Business Growth and this was well received.

CBFL Adjunct Research Professor Alexander Loke's article, 'The Investors' Protected Interest against Market Manipulation in the UK, Australia and Singapore' (2007) 21 Australian Journal of Corporate Law 22, was cited in the recent High Court decision of TMT Asia Limited v BHP Billiton Marketing AG (Singapore Branch) and Another [2015] SGHC 21 at [48] to [53].
