MR STEPHEN LOKE

Stephen graduated from NUS in 1986 and practiced in a law firm before
setting up his practice in Loke & Seah in 1990. He was appointed by the
Consumers association of Singapore in 1997 to Chair a Committee looking
into the possibility of introducing Fair Trading Legislation in Singapore.
The committee submitted its report to the Ministry of Trade & Industry in
August 2000 after a study mission to Australia and New Zealand which he
was a key member of. In March 2001 the Ministry of Trade & Industry
appointed him to Co-Chair a task force made from representatives of
Government, Statutory Boards and industry to consider the report on Fair
Trading hereafter the Task force made recommendations to the Minister of
Trade & Industry. Stephen has worked with industry in pushing for higher
standards to be delivered through the proposed Consumer Protection (Fair
Trading) bill and continues to do so. He has been involved in major
conferences relating to the proposed legislation and currently actively
working with appropriate parties on education programmes to better
understand the impending law.
