ABSTRACT

The talk will look at the most prominent issues discussed in the TRIPS Council recently - including Public Health, the relationship between TRIPS and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), as well as the protection of geographical indications - and give an overview of the state of play of discussions and Members' proposals in each area of the discussions and negotiations.


ABOUT THE SPEAKER


Mr. WOLF R. MEIER-EWERT is the Legal Affairs Officer in the Intellectual Property Division of the World Trade Organization, where he works on issues on issues relating to the Regular and Special Sessions of the TRIPS Council as well as on dispute settlement and legal advice in relation to Intellectual Property and the TRIPS Agreement.

Prior to joining the WTO Secretariat, Mr. Meier-Ewert was an attorney at an international law firm where he dealt with all aspects of intellectual property law in international corporate transactions as well as in cross-border infringement litigation. He has acted as a consultant to the German Federal Ministry of Justice on the implementation of European copyright legislation and has also worked in DG Trade of the European Commission in Brussels. For three years Mr. Meier-Ewert was a researcher at the Max-Planck-Institute for Intellectual Property, Competition and Tax Law in Munich, Germany where he concentrated on copyright law and international private law.

Mr. Meier-Ewert is a graduate of the University of Oxford, UK where he studied Politics and Economics and holds a Law degree from the Ludwig-Maximilian University in Munich, Germany. He was admitted to practise law in Germany in 2000.
