General Information on Subject Registration for LLB Students

  1. All third and final year LLB students and AGL 3 students are required to register on-line for their law electives. The on-line registration will take place in two phases. Balloting will not take place until after the close of registration for each phase, so the time of registration has no impact on the students’ chances of getting a place in a particular subject.

  2. Students should feel free to contact their personal or academic tutors if they would like advice on choosing electives. Students who are interested in a particular subject but who have questions about it should email the course convener.

  3. Students who are not able to register personally should nominate a proxy to register on their behalf. The Proxy Form is available on the Faculty's Subject Registration Page.

  4. Priority in elective subjects is allocated in the following manner:

Phase 1

Graduate students in specialized LLM programmes will be assigned courses of their choice in subjects within their area of specialization. Graduate students doing research degrees will be given priority for subjects their supervisor has required them to take.

Other LLM students, Final Year LLB students, Final Year AGP students, DipSing students and Exchange students will also take part in the Phase 1 registration.

These students are given priority because it is their final or only year with the Faculty and this is the last opportunity for them to take the elective subjects.

Phase 2 Year 3 LLB students will take part in Phase 2 registration. Only subjects with available places will be open to Year 3 LLB students after the completion of the Phase 1 registration.
Phase 3 Phase 3 Non-graduating non-exchange law students from other universities will be permitted to enroll only in those subjects where spaces are available after the completion of the Phase 1 and 2 registration.
  1. Students will be required to register for 20 credits for semester 2. They should also register a total of 5 Law subjects as reserve choices. The first choice list of subjects and the reserve list of subjects can include non-law subjects, subject to the rules set out below on non-law modules for credit.

  2. Students who wish to take more or fewer than 20 credits in semester 2 must first seek the approval of the Assistant Dean.

  3. At the end of the on-line registration process students will be given a print-out of the results of their on-line registration listing their first choice of elective subjects and their reserve choices. It is the responsibility of the student or their proxy to check the accuracy of the print-out before leaving the Computer Lab.

  4. The release of the Add Drop results for electives in Semester 2 will be on Fri 19 Jan (6pm) for Phase 1 and Web 24 Jan (6pm) for Phase 2.

Non-law Modules for Credit

  1. LLB Students are not required to read any non-law subjects (modules) offered by other faculties at NUS.

  2. LLB students are permitted, without any special approval, to take a total of 8 modular credits of subjects from other faculties from a list of modules approved by the Dean. This means that without any approval from the Dean, students can do (a) 8 credits of non-law modules in Year 3; (b) 8 credits of non-law modules in Year 4; or (c) 4 credits of non-law modules in Year 3 and 4 credits of non-law modules in Year 4. However, the modules taken in each year must be from the list of modules approved by the Dean for that academic year.

  3. Students taking non-law subjects have to ensure there are no clashes in the class and examination timetable with their law subjects. Students are advised to regularly check the websites of their respective non-law subjects for any updates.

  4. LLB students may, with the permission of the Dean, do more than 8 modular credits of non-law subjects in other faculties for credit. LLB students may also, with the permission of the Dean, read subjects that are not on the list approved by the Dean. LLB students who wish to request special permission of Dean for either of these purposes should send a letter to the Assistant Dean setting out their request and the reasons.

  5. Non-law subjects read under the scheme described above, will count towards fulfilling the number of credits required to complete the LLB degree.

  6. Students who intend to do non-law subjects for credit should include those modules in the 20 credits they register as first choice when completing the on-line registration form. If the non-law modules are not available because of oversubscription, they will be allocated subjects from their reserve list.

Note: Students will only be allocated a non-law reserve subject if they have included the non-law reserve subject(s) in the online registration system.

If students do not include any non-law reserve subject(s), the system will allocate available subjects from their law reserve list.

Non-Law Modules for Enrichment

  1. LLB Students may be permitted to take modules in other faculties for enrichment purposes. In such cases, the modules will not count towards fulfilling the credits required to complete the LLB degree. Nor will the grades and marks in such modules be taken into account in determining the award of honours. However, the name of the modules and the grades obtained will appear on the transcript.
  2. LLB Students interested in reading non-law modules for enrichment purposes should inform the Assistant Dean.
  3. The Assistant Dean, Ms Goh Mia Yang, can be contacted via email at lawgohmy@nus.edu.sg
