International Trademark Law and Policy

4 Credits,  Semester 2

Course Description:
The emphasis will be on the international and comparative aspects of the subject, including:

  • the international treaties in this area (Paris Convention; TRIPs; Madrid etc) and regional developments (eg. the Community trade mark system in Europe; the harmonization efforts in Asean;)


  • the inter-relationship between trade mark law and the law of unfair competition in civil law jurisdictions;


  • different treatment by countries of topics such as parallel importation; protection of personality interests; dilution; protection of 'trade dress' or 'get up'

Contact Hours: 3-hrs continuous weekly seminar

Workload: 3 hour

Mode of Assessment: 2 Research Papers (45% each) - 90% [to be handed in between weeks 8 and weeks 13]; Class Performance - 10%.

Preclusions: Nil

Prerequisites: NUS Compulsory Core Law Curriculum or equivalent. Students should preferably have taken a basic course on Intellectual Property

Examination Date: 100% Continuous Assessment
