Islamic Law

Course Description:
Course will introduce history and basic concepts of traditional Islamic law, followed by an account of reforms during the 19th and 20th centuries. The course will finish with discussions of the role that something called "Islamic law" plays in the legal system of several contemporary, Muslim majority states. The class will then critically analyse the way the term "Islamic law" is understood by the legislators, judges and authorities who administer the legal system and by citizens subject to "Islamic law". Some themes related to law and modernity will be explored.

Prerequisites: NUS Compulsory Core Law Curriculum or its equivalent.

Examination Date: 100% Continuous Assessment
