Reinsurance Law

Course Description:
This module addresses both the practical and conceptual issues which arise from the international reinsurance market. Topics covered include: the nature of reinsurance - facultative covers and treaties; formation and placement of reinsurance contracts; utmost good faith and the role of producing and placing brokers; incorporation of terms and back to back cover; "follow the fortunes" provisions; claims control and claim co-operation; aggregations and event limits. At the end of the course students will be able to appreciate the various types and mechanics of reinsurance agreements, and will have an understanding of the legal issues which arise from such agreements.

Workload: 3 hour

Mode of Assessment: Take Home Exam - 60% [Release: Sat 24 Oct, 10am; Due: Mon 26 Oct, 10am]; 40% - Class Performance including a short presentation

Preclusions: Nil

Prerequisites: NUS Compulsory Core Law Curriculum or equivalent. Students should have done a basic course on Insurance Law.
