Law, Governance & Development in Asia Last Updated Date: 9 June 2009 4 Credits, Semester 1 Course Description: Issues of law and governance are now critical for the developing, developed and post-conflict states of Asia. The spread of and constitutional, representative government and human rights, based on the rule of law, seems both possible and urgently necessary. But how can, and why should, Asian states follow a colonial constitution or build constitutions embracing contemporary 'good-governance' principles? How can they deal effectively with corruption and abuse of power, and establish political stability and the rule of law? This course examines these issues on a broad comparative canvas, using case studies drawn especially from SE Asian states.
