Private International Law of IP

Course Description:
This course will address issues in private international intellectual property law. After a summary of basic intellectual property principles, the course discusses the sources of international intellectual property law and compares the development of international law through treaty-making and through private litigation. We next examine the clash between the territoriality of intellectual property protection and the global scope of intellectual property exploitation and see how this clash plays out in the key areas of private international law, including the law on personal jurisdiction, subject matter jurisdiction, choice of law, and remedies.

Workload: Intensive [Week 1 -3, 11 - 28 Aug]: No lesson on 18 Aug, make-up class on Wed, 19 Aug 1.30 - 4.30pm

Mode of Assessment: Class Participation - 20%; THExam - 80% [Release: Fri, 9 Oct 09 (4pm); Due: Mon, 12 Oct 09 (10am)]

Preclusions: Nil

Prerequisites: NUS Compulsory Core Law Curriculum or equivalent.
