Notice to Outgoing Exchange Students
AY2007-2008
1. Responsibilities as an Exchange Student As an NUS Exchange Student, you are ambassadors for NUS as well as the Faculty of Law. Please note your responsibilities as an exchange student listed at http://www.nus.edu.sg/registrar/edu/UG/sep_inone.html 2. General Information on the Selection of Subjects while on Exchange While on exchange, it is your responsibility to ensure the following when selecting and reading subjects: a. You must complete sufficient credits while on exchange (Click here for a list of credits requirements at the partner institutions) and b. You must not read subjects which cover substantially the same ground as a subject you may already have read at NUS or which you intend to read when you return to NUS. Where in doubt about your choice of subjects, please email to the Law Student Exchange Team with the following details: i. Name ii. Host University iii. Course Name iv. Course description (course details, contact no. of hours, syllabus etc.) Further advice will be communicated to you via email within three working days of the receipt of your query. For students in the Economics and Law Double Degree Programmes who are going on exchange, please also read the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences website at http://www.fas.nus.edu.sg/undergrad/toknow/special_programmes/sep.html 3. Selection of Non-law Subjects (Modules) You are allowed to read non-law subjects (modules) but please adhere strictly to the conditions and requirements as set out in paragraphs 9 to 14 at http://law.nus.edu.sg/current/LLB/ay0708/sem1/infollb.htm In particular, we wish to draw your attention to paragraph 10 which states that students can read a. 8 credits of non-law modules in Year 3 or b. 8 credits of non-law modules in Year 4 or c. 4 credits of non-law modules in Year 3 and 4 credits of non-law modules in Year 4. In general, no more than 10% of non-law modules in your Third and Fourth year of study is allowed. The non-law modules must be from the approved list, which will be made available on the website in July 2007. While on exchange, you can do the equivalent of 8 credits out of a total of 80 credits taken in your final two years at the Law School. This means that if you exceed the 10% limit while on exchange at the host university, you are not permitted to do any non-law modules upon your return to NUS to complete your final year. The host university’s credit system may not allow one to do precisely 10% of non-law modules, so it is important that you submit your final list of courses while on exchange. The list will be reviewed and approved by the Director of International Programmes. Where in doubt, please contact us at lawsep@nus.edu.sg Students going on exchange may take any language courses offered in our partner universities, subject to the approval of the Director of International Programmes. 4. Submission of Finalised List of Subjects You are required to complete this form with the required course information once the subjects are finalized. This is to ensure that you have sufficient number of credits and that the non-law modules are substantially similar to those in the approved list for non-law modules at NUS. The form should be submitted via email to lawsep@nus.edu.sg with the following subject title and your full name & partner university: <COURSE SELECTION: NAME- PARTNER UNIVERSITY> We will acknowledge receipt via email within two working days and notify you via email if there are any problems with your course selections. If you are on exchange for a FULL academic year, you must reconfirm with us your Semester 2 course selection at the start of the Semester in the host university if there are any changes to your course selection as submitted at the beginning of the year. Otherwise, we shall assume that there are no changes. 5. Failure of Subjects / Insufficient Credits You will receive credit for subjects taken in other institutions while on approved exchange programmes. While neither the marks nor the grades shall be taken into account in calculating the Class of Honours for your LL.B. degree, you are expected to pass all the subjects during your exchange stint to ensure that you complete the number of credits required for graduation. In the unfortunate event that you fail any subject while on exchange, please email to the Law Student Exchange Team immediately as you may be required to overload the number of modules to make up for the credits when you return to NUS. Please provide full details of the subject/s failed (Name of course, description) as well as the academic contact at the partner university. The Law Student Exchange Team will advise you on the follow-up action within one week of receipt of your email. 6. Official Transcripts from Host University Upon completion of your exchange programme, if you have been issued the official transcript from the host university, you must submit a copy to The Law Student Exchange Team at the following address:
Faculty of Law, National
University of Singapore
7. Leave of Absence (LOA) Students who are selected for the exchange programme are deemed to be on Leave of Absence (LOA) from NUS for the duration of the exchange programme. Once the partner university accepts you as an exchange student, we will proceed to update your student status to reflect that you are away on student exchange. Please submit a copy of your acceptance letter from the partner university if you have not done so. Please note that you need not participate in the subject registration exercise for Year 3 (Phase 2) for the semester you are away on exchange if you have already received confirmation of your acceptance to the partner university. Should you decide to withdraw or if your application is rejected by the partner university, please inform the Law Student Exchange Team immediately. This is important as it has implications on the subject registration, and other administrative matters. 8. Communications Email: All correspondences with NUS will be sent from lawsep@nus.edu.sg to your NUS email account. Please check and clear your mailbox on a regular basis to ensure that your mailbox quota is not exceeded. You may wish to provide an alternative email account in the event that we are unable to contact you via the NUS account. Overseas address and phone number: Please inform us of your overseas address and phone number while on exchange. We welcome any queries or feedback whether it relates to course work or life as an exchange student. Photographs are most welcome. 9. Pupillage Matters Pupillage matters are administered by the law student body. Please ensure that you have checked with your class representative on pupillage application procedures before you leave for your exchange especially if your school term at the partner university is still ongoing when the moratorium date comes into effect. 10. Subject Registration for Returning Exchange Students The Undergraduate Division will email to you the details of subject registration sometime in late October/November if you are returning to NUS for Semester 2, AY2007-8 or in late June/July if you are returning to NUS for Semester 1, AY2008-9.
