NUS Law Students Win Fourth International Mooting Competition in 2001

NUS law students participated for the first time in the Asia Cup International Law Moot Court Competition recently and emerged champions by defeating the University of Ateneo from the Philippines, in the Final Round.

The Asia Cup Moot held from 23-31 August in Tokyo, was sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japan. The 2001 Asia Cup Moot case involved a hypothetical dispute between two countries concerning the regulation of international whaling. Teams from law schools participating in the competition were required to submit written arguments called Memorials in late June. The teams submitting the best Memorials were then invited to Tokyo to participate in the oral arguments in August. The teams which were invited to participate in the oral arguments included combined teams from four Japanese schools (Kyoto, Sophia, Tokyo and Waseda) as well as teams from the following institutions in other Asian countries: Ateneo University (Philippines), Chulalongkorn University (Thailand), Institute for International Relations (Vietnam), Tsinghua University (China), University of Malaya (Malaysia), University of Indonesia (Indonesia) and National University of Singapore (Singapore).

The NUS team comprised two final year students, Jason Chan and Kabir Singh, and two third year students, Shivani Retnam and Su-yin Anand. Jason Chan and Kabir Singh were also members of NUS team which won the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition. Shivani and Su-yin will be spending their third year of law studies at McGill University on a Student Exchange Programme.

Said team member Jason Chan: "The Competition was a tough one, with the top law schools from around the region taking part. However, what was unique about this Competition was that it provided us with a wonderful opportunity to meet and make friends with our counterparts from around the region."

Team member Su-yin was honoured to have represented NUS and Singapore at an international competition. "I am happy that we emerged victorious. It would not have been possible without the guidance of our Coach, Professor Beckman, and Kabir and Jason, who are experienced international mooters."

This is the fourth international mooting competition that NUS students have won this year. In March, NUS law students won the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition in Washington, as well as the Asia-Pacific Regional Round of the Manfred Lachs International Space Law Moot Court Competition, which was held in Singapore. In June, NUS law students won the International Maritime Law Arbitration Moot Competition, which was held in Hong Kong.
