NUS law graduates who wish to work in the United States can now obtain a Juris Doctor degree (JD) within two years instead of the usual three years. Under a joint agreement between the George Washington University Law School (GW) and NUS, NUS law graduates, who obtain a minimum GPA (Grade Point Average) of 2.0 during their first-year JD programme at GW, will be allowed to transfer 28 credits from their NUS law degree. This will enable them to complete the JD within two years of full-time study. Dean Michael K. Young of the GW Law School stated that "No relationship is more important than America's relationship with Asia. We are delighted to be able to work with NUS, one of the best universities in Asia, indeed, in the world, to help strengthen the US-Asia relationship." Besides NUS law graduates, law graduates from only two other universities, namely, Oxford and Cambridge have been allowed by GW to transfer their credits in a similar manner. "I'm delighted that more options are now available to our students in terms of graduate studies under the GW programme," said Associate Professor Tan Cheng Han, Dean of NUS Faculty of Law. "GW is an excellent law school and NUS law graduates will benefit from pursuing graduate studies there. At the same time, this is one of the NUS Law Faculty's initiatives to build a global law school to meet the challenges posed by the increasingly cross-border nature of legal practice. As such, we are currently negotiating similar programmes with a very select group of overseas law schools."
