NUS Faculty of Law Signs Agreement with East China University of Politics and Law

The NUS Faculty of Law has signed a comprehensive agreement to collaborate on academic matters with the East China University of Politics and Law in Shanghai, PRC. The agreement, which was signed by Associate Professor Tan Cheng Han, Dean of the Faculty of Law, NUS and Professor He Qinhua, President of the East China University of Politics and Law on 16 April 2002, provides for student and staff exchange programmes, joint participation in research activities, joint academic conferences, and the exchange of institutional publications. The East China University of Politics and Law is the first Asian law school which the Faculty has signed an exchange agreement with.

Under the terms of the student exchange agreement, each institution is entitled to send up to 10 students for a semester each year to the partner institution. The first exchange of students is expected to take place in August 2002. In connection with the staff exchange agreement, three academics from the East China University of Politics and Law are expected to take up visiting appointments at NUS in August 2002 while Associate Professors Alexander Loke and Daniel Seng from NUS will be doing the same at the East China University of Politics and Law. They will be teaching Securities Regulation and Information Technology Law respectively.

The East China University of Politics and Law was founded in 1952 as a result of a merger between the departments of law, politics and sociology of Saint Johns University, Fudan University, Nanjing University, Dongwu University, Hujiang University and Anhui University. It has 268 academic staff and a student population of nearly 10,000. Its undergraduate programme was given an A rating in November 1996 by the Ministry of Justice in its accreditation of its colleges and universities. Many of the university's professors have taken up important posts in academic organizations across the country or are working as legal experts or consultants for government organizations. The East China University of Politics and Law has also been involved in the drafting of over 200 laws and regulations in China for various legislative bodies.

"We are delighted to enter into this agreement with the East China University of Politics and Law. It has one of the best law schools in China and signals the NUS Faculty of Law's desire to give our students the opportunity to spend a significant amount of time in China to familiarise themselves with the people, culture and laws of a country that is already a major economic force in the world today," said Associate Professor Tan Cheng Han, Dean of the NUS Faculty of Law.

The NUS Faculty of Law currently has exchange agreements with many top law schools in the world, including Columbia University, Duke University, University of Bristol, University of Nottingham, McGill University, University of Toronto, University of Melbourne and University of Sydney.
