NUS Associate Professor Simon SC Tay of the Faculty of Law has been awarded an Eisenhower Fellowship for 2002. The prestigious Fellowship, named after the former US President, offers a specially designed programme to visit the USA and exchange views with leading American officials, experts and academics. Associate Professor Tay, who was recently appointed to head the newly-formed National Environment Agency, a government statutory body under the Ministry of the Environment, will focus the two months of his Fellowship on an examination of US attitudes to international peace and sustainable development, post 9-11. This will link to his research and thinking on international law and policy, his focus at the Faculty. He is also chairman of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs, a think tank. During his visit, he will be hosted by and give talks to a number of leading academic institutions. These include Stanford University, the Fletcher School for International Law and Diplomacy, Yale University, UCLA (Berkeley)’s East Asian Institute, New York University Center for International Conflict, and the Johns Hopkins’ School for Advanced International Studies. Past Eisenhower Fellowship recipients from Singapore include senior civil servants and politicians, such as EDB Co-chair Mr Philip Yeo, former Defence Minister and DBS Chairman Mr Howe Yoon Chong, and Acting Minister for Information and the Arts, Mr David Lim. When serving as NUS Vice-Chancellor, Professor Lim Pin was also an Eisenhower fellow.
