05 February 2003 NUS law students produce radio programme in innovative service-learning project In an innovative service-learning project, five students from the National University of Singapore (NUS) Faculty of Law have produced a six-episode radio programme entitled Sex, Rights & Videotape. The programme was produced with assistance and support from NewsRadio 93.8 and will air on that station, starting Sunday 9 February 2003. The programme delves into what the law is and where the law should be when individual rights and social interests collide in areas such as sexual behavior, press freedom, access to government information, reputation and privacy. A summary of the topics covered by the six episodes is attached. Conceived as a way to combine learning with service to the community, the project reflects the University’s law school’s ambition to experiment with innovative teaching methods that bring home to students the place of law in society. In order to produce the programme, team members had to research the law on the various topics. Team members also interviewed legal experts, academics, opinion-leaders and lay persons to get their views. They designed and administered an online website survey which sought views from the public about what they thought the law should be. During this process, team members not only practised legal skills (such as research and analysis, interview techniques, and communication skills), but they also gained insight into the social, political and cultural contexts of the legal issues they were exploring. From a community perspective, the project aims to inform the public about these issues in an interesting and intellectually stimulating way. By reporting some of what interviewees and people who participated in the online poll said, the programme also hopes to give voice to the views of some Singaporeans on these matters. The five members of the team are Lynette Chua, Sonita Jeyapathy, Amarjit Kaur, Denise Khoo and Shivani Retnam. The project was supervised by Associate Professor Eleanor Wong. The programme is scheduled to air weekly 2.00 - 3.00 pm on Sundays and repeat at 10.00 -11.00 pm on Mondays, from February 9 to March 16. A summary of the programme is attached.
