Mallal Moots Final - Revisiting Jasbir Singh v. PP - 21 Sept. 2006

The Mooting and Debating Club, a student-run organisation dedicated to promoting oratorical skills, is pleased to present the 2006 Mallal Moots Final on 21st September at 6.15 pm in the Moot Court.

This year's case involves an accused person's right to counsel and invites a reconsideration of the principles set out in Jasbir Singh v. Public Prosecutor [1994] SLR 18, where a two-week delay in providing access to counsel was held to be reasonable. Presiding will be Judicial Commissioner Sundaresh Menon '86, Senior Counsel K. Shanmugam '84 and Associate Professor Robert Beckman. Menon JC and Shanmugam SC were formidable student mooters in their time, having participated in the Mallals themselves and having been coached for the Philip C. Jessup Moots by none other than Prof. Beckman. The finalists this year are: Pardeep Singh Khosa '08 (Law III), Jared Kok '09 (Law II), Magdalene Sim '09 (Law II) and Tiong Teck Wee '09 (Law II).

The Competition is sponsored by Allen & Gledhill. This marks the first time the Mallal Moots will be held in the Moot Court at the law school's new Bukit Timah campus. All are welcome to attend.
