Playwright/Lawyer: Eleanor Wong - Where are the boundaries for an open society?
11 September 2007, Section 3, Page 5, Lianhe Zaobao

Summary of article:
Associate Professor Eleanor Wong is also a playwright and is famous for her controversial works such as "Mergers and Accusations", "Wills and Secession" and "Jointly and Severably". Her latest play, "The Campaign To Confer The Public Service Star On JBJ" uses the famous opposition party leader J.B. Jeyaretnam as an imaginary character in her play. The play talks about how a university student in support of J.B. Jeyaretnam goes around collecting signatures for a petition to confer the public service award on him. The student later dies in an accident.

Like her plays, Prof Wong herself is not a conventional or predictable person.
She gave up her job as a lawyer that earned
her an annual income of $350,000 to become a lecturer in a university. She said that she loves the logic of law, but hates the absolute power of it. Commenting on her play, she said that Singapore today is an open society, and we should be able to openly discuss the topic of JBJ's contributions to society. But in reality, our society is not as open as we think, or perhaps we do not know the boundaries of our open society, she added.
