NUS invites nominations and applications for the position
of Dean of NUS Law School
The National University of Singapore (NUS) invites nominations and
applications for the position of Dean of NUS Law School. The incumbent Dean,
Professor Tan Cheng Han, will be stepping down on 31 May 2010, after having
served with distinction for three terms.
NUS is a leading global university in Asia and a comprehensive university
which is internationally recognized for its research and teaching
excellence. NUS Law School is one of the leading law schools in the
Commonwealth.
ABOUT NUS LAW SCHOOL:
Located in Singapore, which for almost 200 years has been a major
international commercial hub and a cosmopolitan city, NUS Law School is the
premier law school in Singapore and also widely regarded as Asia’s
foremost centre for legal research. NUS Law School has an international
research active faculty of approximately 60 people and 1200 undergraduate
and postgraduate students. NUS Law School’s faculty is a scholarly community
dedicated to the constant search for better legal solutions to the issues
that confront all societies. The faculty is committed to research and
regularly publishes books and monographs and articles in leading journals in
Singapore and abroad.
Apart from the LLB degree, NUS offers a number of degrees which include the
following degrees: law and business, law and economics, law and life
sciences and law and public policy, the LLM and the PhD. Since 2006, NUS Law
School has been situated in the historic Bukit Timah campus.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The new Dean is required to provide intellectual leadership to the Law
School to foster and enhance NUS Law School’s vibrant national and
international reputation for research and teaching excellence. He or she
will be expected to bring the Law School to greater heights and to raise the
profile of the Law School nationally and globally. The Dean is also tasked
to manage all aspects of the Law School’s administration which includes
academic affairs, financial management, operations and planning,
fundraising, alumni outreach, student and faculty recruitment and
institutional building.
JOB QUALIFICATION
NUS Law School seeks a candidate with a strong reputation as a scholar, an
intellectual leader and an outstanding track record of imaginative,
strategic and visionary leadership. Although the expectation is that the
candidate is a full professor with tenure at a distinguished law school, the
Dean Search Committee is prepared to consider exceptional candidates who may
not be of professorial rank. Candidates must have excellent interpersonal
skills to work collegially with faculty, staff and alumni and also to earn
the support and trust of the various stakeholders in order to bring the Law
School to greater heights of research and teaching excellence.
