Team from NUS victorious in the 4th ICC International
Commercial Mediation Competition
The NUS team comprising four Law-Business Double Degree Programme students –
Marcus Lim Tao Shien, Jeanne Gwendoline Duclos, Lim Yuhui and Jennifer
Gankee Ong - have won the 4th International Chamber of Commerce
International Commercial Mediation Competition this February 2009. The
competition is organised by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) - an
established international body for alternative dispute resolution.
In the competition, law students pair up as counsel and client in a
mediation against another team in front of an ICC mediator, and 2 ICC
mediators who act as judges. This set-up provides a forum for participants
and spectators to see the ICC mediators in action and to hear their views on
appropriate negotiation techniques to be employed by lawyers and counsel in
international mediation.
The competition is limited to 40 universities each year. This year the 40
universities represented 18 countries.
This is NUS's second year participating. There were four preliminary rounds
in which the team beat Fordham Law School, Georgetown, Stockholm and
Belarus. In the Quarter-Finals, the team beat Gujarat Law School. The
Semi-Finals were against the University of California at Hastings - a
finalist in last year’s competition. The finals were against Hamline
University from the US. This is the first time that an Asian team has won
the competition.
