Symposium on Health Care Challenges for an Ageing Population
- Physical Abuse the most common
The article features the results of an exploratory study on the most common kind of abuse against the elderly conducted by Associate Professor Chan Wing Cheong from the NUS Faculty of Law. The results of the study was presented at an NUS symposium titled, "Health-care Challenges for an Ageing Population", which was held on 29 May 2009. The study is one of three known local studies on this topic and was based on an analysis of 89 cases of substantiated abuse of the elderly as assessed by voluntary welfare organisation TRANS Centre or Safe@TRANS.

More than 100 academics, social workers and volunteer groups shared their views on the medical challenges brought by an ageing population in a seminar organised by the National University of Singapore (NUS) yesterday. - Lawyer's friend gives $1m in his name
The Amaladass Fellowship was set up in memory of the late legal
practitioner Mr M. Amaladass, from a donation of S$1 million from an
anonymous donor who was a friend of Mr Amaladass. The Fellowship would
be used to support the appointment of an Associate Professor at the Law
School and the donor has expressed a preference for the Fellowship to be
awarded to an Associate Professor specialising in Criminal Law, which
was which was one of Mr Amaladass' main areas of practice during his
almost 30 years in the profession.

at talent
In this article on how the big law firms are no longer hiring all the
pupils and junior lawyers, it was mentioned that for the past several
years, the big four would take in practically all the 240 to 250 law
graduates from NUS as pupils and the retention rate was typically at
least 80 per cent. Associate Professor Alan Tan, Vice-Dean (Research and
Graduate Studies) at the NUS Faculty of Law, said that the current
economic climate would help to create a market equilibrium of sorts.

- 55 from 25 countries win dual law
degrees
The second batch of students from the NYU@NUS dual-degree programme
graduated during last night’s ceremony, held at the Asian Civilisations
Museum. Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for National
Security S. Jayakumar, who was guest-of-honour at the ceremony, had
described the programme as being part of a thriving global ecosystem in
Singapore. One of the three local graduates, Mr Alvin Chen, also
mentioned that he valued the course for its rigour and multicultural
nature. A total of 55 students from 25 countries across six continents,
including France, India and Kenya, took part in the 10-month programme.

- Economic downturn unlikely to affect
entry trends into law schools
The report highlighted that it was unlikely for entry trends of students
to the NUS and SMU law schools to be affected by the global economic
downturn. Professor Tan Cheng Han, Dean of the NUS Faculty of Law, noted
that law schools would continue to do well, as law graduates could work
in many areas. It was also reported that Parliament had earlier
announced that students who did their overseas legal education and who
wished to practice in Singapore had to take an optional three-month
conversion course. NUS is in discussion with the authorities to run the
conversion course.

Transnational Legal Studies
The Centre for Transnational Legal Studies kicks off in London
In the 2008/09 academic year, a first-of-its-kind Center for
Transnational Legal Studies opens in the heart of London’s legal
quarter. Based in Georgetown University Law Center, the program will
bring together faculty and students from several of the world’s top
law schools to study transnational legal issues in a multicultural
and transnational setting.
The Center is a joint venture
with premier law schools from countries around the world.
Georgetown’s initial partners in the Center include Free University
of Berlin, the University of Fribourg (in Switzerland), the Hebrew
University of Jerusalem, King’s College London, the University of
Melbourne, the National University of Singapore, the University of
Sao Paulo, the University of Torino, and the University of Toronto.

Nominated Member of Parliament (NMP) scheme and highlights the
contributions of various NMPs, including the Faculty of Law’s
Professor Walter Woon, Professor Thio Li-ann and Associate Professor

The motion was vetoed 62 votes to 5 for giving unfair power to some
