CALL FOR PAPERS

The Planning Committee for the Inauguration of the Asian Society of International Law is currently engaged in the organization of an International Symposium on the occasion of the launch of the Asian Society of International Law. The Society’s Inaugural Conference will be held on the Bukit Timah Campus of its Secretariat, the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore (NUS), April 7-9, 2007.

The establishment of the Asian Society of International Law is an historic occasion and the President of the International Court of Justice, H.E. Dame Rosalyn Higgins (United Kingdom) will address the Inaugural Conference to celebrate the occasion. The Faculty of Law of the National University of Singapore is honoured to host the 2007 Inaugural Conference as it celebrates 50 years of legal education in Singapore.

The Symposium will be organized along the following five themes:

  • International Law in Asia - Past, Present and Future (Plenary Session)

  • International Commercial Arbitration (Panel Session)

  • International Law of Human Rights (Panel Session)

  • International Law on Peace and Security (Panel Session)

  • The International Law of the Sea (Panel Session)

The Planning Committee especially welcomes the participation of young scholars, practitioners and research students working in the field of international law in the Inaugural Conference and the Symposium. Such participants can be from within the region or outside the region.

Participants in the panels will be selected on the basis of the submission of papers. These should focus on one of the topics above, preferably with a special Asian emphasis.

In selecting the papers, the organizers will give priority to the quality of the proposal. At the same time, due regard will be given to an appropriate geographical distribution and gender balance. Proposals should include the title of the proposed paper, an abstract of 250 words (in MS Word), and the full institutional affiliation, email address, fax and phone number of the presenter. While the deadline for all abstract proposals is 1 December 2006, potential applicants should note that early submissions are strongly encouraged, as participation is limited. Approved speakers will be notified by 1 January 2007, and they should submit their final papers of between 8,000 and 10,000 words by 7 March 2007. Each speaker will be allocated 20 minutes during the conference. Participants will be responsible for their own travel and accommodation expenses. Approved speakers will have their meals provided for during the duration of the conference in addition to local transportation and conference materials.
