Accommodation and Living Expenses
(Accurate as at September 2008)

  • Living Expenses

We estimate that living expenses in Singapore will fall in the range of S$8,000 to S$12,000 per year. This will include the cost of accommodation and food. Accommodation options range from on- or off-campus university housing to rooms or apartments in the private housing market.

  • Accommodation in Singapore

The Law School has moved to its new premises since July 2006 at Bukit Timah. Bukit Timah was the original home of the Faculty in the 1950s to 1970s before NUS moved to Kent Ridge.

University Housing
On-campus housing for graduate students is limited to the Prince George’s Park Residences at the main Kent Ridge Campus. Full-time NUS international graduate students married with spouses and/or children in Singapore will be given priority to apply as the Graduate Student Apartments are designed to cater to small families. Other students usually have to live off-campus. Please note that university housing is not guaranteed as demand usually exceeds supply. For more information on university housing and other options, please refer to the Office of Student Affairs website at
http://www.nus.edu.sg/osa/housing/acc/gd.html. The rates can be found at http://www.nus.edu.sg/osa/housing/acc/gd_rates.html

There is a free shuttle bus service plying between the main Kent Ridge Campus and the Bukit Timah Campus, which takes about 30 minutes per way. For the bus route and schedules, please refer to the Office of Estate and Development website at http://www.nus.edu.sg/oed/services/csd/transportation/btcshuttlebusservice.htm

Private Housing
Student housing around the Bukit Timah Campus is limited. We list below some options, which are privately-run residences, and is no way connected to the Faculty of Law or the National University of Singapore. Please do acquaint yourselves with all the terms and conditions found on the relevant websites, and settle your accommodation early.

1) Evans Lodge (http://www.evanslodge.com.sg/)

Advantages: Minutes away and within walking distance from the Faculty of Law.

Disadvantages: Limited rooms, with some non air-conditioned rooms; no attached bathrooms/toilets but are found as common facilities on each floor of the residence

Rates : Please contact Evans Lodge directly for the details.

To secure a space, you will have to pay a non-refundable deposit of S$50 and one (1) month's accommodation in advance, upon being made an offer. The booking form is at http://www.evanslodge.com.sg/downloads/Ver 4-Booking Form.pdf, with the fax number/mailing address contained therein. In stating your course details in the form, please indicate "NUS LLM". Terms and conditions can be found on http://www.evanslodge.com.sg/downloads.html.

The booking form should be submitted to Evans Lodge by 31 May of the year of admission for candidates offered the International Business Law programme and by 30 June of the year of admission for candidates offered other LLM programmes.

2. Singapore International Campus (http://www.sicampus.com.sg/)

Advantages: Minutes away and within walking distance from the Faculty of Law.

Disadvantages: Limited rooms.

Rates: Please contact SIC directly for the details.

3. Private residences around the Kent Ridge and Bukit Timah Campuses (http://www.nus.edu.sg/osa/housing/acc/pvt.html)

The NUS Office of Student Affairs maintains a list of private accommodation such as single or double rooms in private apartment blocks around the Kent Ridge and Bukit Timah campuses. Students might find it helpful to arrange short-term accommodation in Singapore first, and finalize their permanent housing arrangements after arrival in Singapore.

4. Other private apartments and residences

In many ways, this is the best option, if your budget allows for it. It is a good option to rent a whole apartment, particularly if there is a group of you sharing. Alternatively, you could rent a room with the resident landlord/owner. You may prefer to come to Singapore early, book yourself into a hotel, and look for accommodation yourself using the services of a rental/property agent. This way, you can customize the place to your needs – location, cost, comfort level, etc. Prices range from S$550 to S$950 per person per month, depending on the location.
