countries.
Message from Vice-Dean Alan Tan,
Director of the Graduate Division
Dear Prospective Students,
Welcome to the NUS Law Graduate Programmes website, where I hope you
will get a good idea of the exciting programmes that we have to offer.
Our programmes are among the finest and most innovative in the world,
and
whether you pursue an
LLM by coursework,
LLM by research, a
PhD, or any of our
Graduate Diplomas, you will receive an
unparalleled quality education at Asia’s Global Law School.
The graduate programmes at the NUS Law Faculty present exciting
opportunities to study in a stimulating environment that is
international in focus yet rooted in Asia. Whether for research or
coursework, Singapore is an ideal place for a unique educational
experience, being situated geographically and figuratively at the
crossroads of the East and West. On the one hand, English is the
language of instruction at the Faculty and Singapore’s legal system is
historically linked to the common law system in England. Yet, the
country’s location in Southeast Asia - among other countries with
different legal traditions and cultures - has led to diversity in its
development. Its relatively small size, the ethnic mix of its local
population and its long history as a trading nation have also meant that
Singapore is necessarily outward-looking. These factors, together with
Singapore’s status as a modern and technologically-advanced
international business and financial centre, are reflected in the
courses offered at the Faculty. Students may also get the opportunity to
gain practical experience in Singapore’s legal environment through
attachment programmes with law firms, government institutions and other
organisations.

Reflecting the cosmopolitan nature of the law school, our graduate students
come from over 40 countries and territories, representing all the continents
in their diversity. In the 2008/09 academic year, our graduate students hail
from: Australia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brazil, Brunei, Cambodia, Canada,
Chile, China, Colombia, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India,
Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Liechtenstein, Malaysia,
Maldives, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, Russia, Rwanda,
Singapore, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand,
Uganda, the United Kingdom, the United States, Venezuela and Vietnam.
Our constant desire to innovate has also led to the introduction of two
brand-new coursework concentrations from August 2007 – Asian Legal Studies
and Maritime Law – complementing the existing Corporate and Financial
Services Law, International and Comparative Law and Intellectual Property
and Technology Law concentrations. Apart from our general
LLM by Coursework programme, the law school offers a specialized
programme - the
LLM in International Business Law - taught in Singapore and Shanghai in
partnership with the East China University of Politics and Law. In addition,
we have partnered the New York University (NYU) School of Law to offer the
NYU@NUS programme. This is an exciting and innovative dual degree
programme that began in May 2007, offering students the opportunity to earn
LLM degrees from two top law schools.
Do take time to surf the entire webpage for more details on these
programmes. I look forward to receiving your applications, and to welcoming
you personally to our beautiful campus and city.
Warmest regards,
Alan Tan
