4-Year LL.B. Programme
 

Each year more than 200 students enter the LL.B. programmes at the Faculty of Law. Although most of the LL.B. students are Singaporeans, the programme is also open to international students.

Admission to the 4-Year LL.B. Programme

  • Applicants should have good overall A level results, including at least B grade in H1 General Paper (GP), or a good pass in H2 Knowledge & Inquiry (KI); or SAT I Verbal / Critical Reading score of 700 accompanied by a minimum E grade for GP/KI.
     

  • For those who offer the old A level syllabus, a grade B3 or better in General Paper (GP) or a minimum SAT I Verbal / Critical Reading score of 700 and a C6 in GP is required
     

  • An improved GP grade of B3 (for old syllabus) / B (for new syllabus) or better in GP or a good pass in KI (for new syllabus) from another sitting can qualify one for application to Law, but only the GP or KI grade obtained in the same sitting as the other main A level content papers can be used for computation of University Score (US).
     

  • International applicants should have equivalent high school qualifications and those who possess high school qualifications which are in the non-English medium are required to submit proof of their proficiency in the English language, for example, a minimum TOEFL score of 600 (paper-based) or 250 (computer-based) or 100 (internet-based) or IELTS score of 6.5.
     

  • Students completing the International Baccalaureate qualification in the year of admission to NUS may apply based on their projected results.
     

  • Please refer to the Office of Admissions website at www.nus.edu.sg/oam/apply for the detailed admission requirements and application procedures. Please note that different application deadlines apply to different applicant category and high school qualifications.
     

  • Shortlisted applicants will be required to sit for a written test and attend a formal interview, usually held in late April/early May in Singapore. Selection shall be solely within the discretion of the University and will depend upon the number of places available in the Faculty.
     

  • To be considered for the shortlisting for the Law test and interview, please indicate Law in your application form as the first and/or second choice. If you are interested in the Double Degree Programmes or Concurrent Degree, you should opt for these in the same application form.
     


Compulsory Core Law Curriculum (CCLC)

Law students have to complete the subjects listed under the compulsory core law curriculum (CCLC) in the first two to three years of their legal education. Students in the 4 Year LL.B. Programme must complete a total of 160 credits.

Legal Analysis, Writing & Research I  (4 credits, Semester 1)
Singapore Legal System (4 credits, Semester 1)
Criminal Law (8 credits, Semester 2)
Introduction to Legal Theory (4 credits, Semester 2)
Legal Analysis, Writing & Research II (4 credits, Semester 2)

2nd Year Compulsory Courses (40 credits)

Company Law  (8 credits, Semester 1)
Comparative Legal Traditions (4 credits, Semester 1)
Principles of Property Law (8 credits, Semester 1)
Introduction to Trial Advocacy (Pass/Fail, Semester 1)
Equity & Trusts (8 credits, Semester 2)
Public Law (8 credits, Semester 2)
Legal Case Studies (4 credits, Semester 2)

3rd year Compulsory & Elective Courses (40 credits)

Evidence (8 credits)
32 credits of elective subjects

4th Year Elective Courses (40 credits)
 

*Students who spend their 3rd Year on an exchange programme will read Evidence in the 4th Year.
 

The objectives of the CCLC are:

  • to give students an understanding of the basic law subjects and general principles of law that are essential for every law graduate and lawyer;
     
  • to provide students with training in the basic skills essential for every lawyer, including analysis, research, writing, advocacy and problem-solving; and
     
  • to give students an appreciation of the role of law and lawyers in their own society and in the global community that will better equip them to deal with the challenges of globalization

Elective Subjects

During their Third and Final Years, students are permitted to choose from a wide range of elective subjects. The electives enable students to specialize in areas such as corporate and financial law, intellectual property and information technology law, and international law. There are also elective subjects that enable students to improve their skills in negotiation, mediation, advocacy and legal research and writing.

Student Exchange Programme

The Student Exchange Programme (SEP) enables NUS law students to spend either one or both semesters of their 3rd Year at a foreign university on a Student Exchange Programme. Selection is based on merit. The Faculty of Law has Student Exchange Programmes with leading law schools in Australia, Canada, East Asia, Europe, New Zealand, United Kingdom and the United States. About one third of our Third year students have the opportunity to participate in a SEP.

International Mooting Competitions

The Faculty of Law has been recognized for the outstanding performance of its teams in several leading international mooting competitions. During their Third or Final year, students are eligible to try out for one of the NUS international mooting teams.

Degree and Class of Honours

Students who complete the programme are awarded the LL.B. (Honours) degree. With effect from 1997, only graduates holding at least a  Second Lower degree are permitted to qualify for legal practice in Singapore.
