3-Year Graduate LL.B. Programme (GLP)

The objective of this Programme is to inject multidisciplinary talent into the legal profession, as the demands of the profession become more sophisticated and technical in certain areas like patent law, environmental law and computer law. This Programme is open to University graduates with a first degree.


Admission to the 3-Year Graduate LL.B. Programme

  • Applicants should possess a university degree, preferably in a non-law discipline, or are completing their first degree by June of the year of admission (August intake). 2 academic referees will be required. If you have left school for some years and are unable to submit academic referees, please provide 2 recommendation letters from your employers as an alternative.

  • Please download the Referee Report Form

  • Foreign applicants, whose university degree is in the non-English medium, are required to submit proof of their proficiency in the English language, for example, a minimum TOEFL score of 600 (paper-based) or 250 (computer-based) or 100 (internet-based) or IELTS score of 6.5.
     

  • Applicants must be prepared to do the course full-time for three years.

  • Shortlisted applicants will be required to sit for a written test and attend a formal interview, usually held in April/May in Singapore. Selection shall be solely within the discretion of the University and will depend upon the number of places available in the Faculty.
     

  • To be considered for the shortlisting for the written test and interview, please indicate Law as the first choice, as there is no separate option for the Graduate LL.B. Programme under the choice of courses.
     


Compulsory Core Law Curriculum (CCLC)

Graduate LL.B. Programme students must complete a total of 120 credits in three years, 88 credits of which consist of the compulsory core law curriculum (CCLC). The 80 credits of subjects taken in the first two years are all part of the CCLC.

Law of Torts (8 credits, Semester 1)
Legal Analysis, Writing & Research I (4 credits, Semester 1)
Singapore Legal System (4 credits, Semester 1)
Criminal Law (8 credits, Semester 2)
Introduction to Legal Theory (4 credits, Semester 2)
Legal Analysis, Writing & Research II (4 credits, Semester 2)

2nd Year Compulsory Courses (40 credits)

Company Law (8 credits, Semester 1)
Comparative Legal Traditions (4 credits, Semester 1)
Principles of Property Law  (8 credits, Semester 1)
Introduction to Trial Advocacy (Pass/Fail, Semester 1)
Equity & Trusts (8 credits, Semester 2)
Public Law (8 credits, Semester 2)
Legal Case Studies (4 credits, Semester 2)

3rd Year Compulsory & Elective Courses (40 credits)

Evidence (8 credits)
32 credits of elective subjects

 

The objectives of the CCLC are:

  • to give students an understanding of the basic law subjects and general principles of law that are essential for every law graduate and lawyer;
     
  • to provide students with training in the basic skills essential for every lawyer, including analysis, research, writing, advocacy and problem-solving; and
     
  • to give students an appreciation of the role of law and lawyers in their own society and in the global community that will better equip them to deal with the challenges of globalization.

Elective Subjects

During their Final Year, GLP students are required to take one 8-credit compulsory core law subject. For their remaining 32 credits, they are permitted to choose from a wide selection of elective subjects. The electives enable students to specialize in areas such as corporate and financial law, intellectual property and information technology law, or international and comparative law. There are also elective subjects that enable students to improve their skills in negotiation, mediation, advocacy and legal research & writing.

Student Exchange Programme

GLP students are eligible to apply to spend the 1st semester of their Final Year at a foreign university on a Student Exchange Programme (SEP). Selection is based on merit. The Faculty of Law has Student Exchange Programmes with leading law schools in Australia, Canada, East Asia, Europe, New Zealand, United Kingdom and the United States.

International Mooting Competitions

The Faculty of Law has been recognized for the outstanding performance of its teams in several leading international mooting competitions. During their Final Year, GLP students are eligible to try out for one of the NUS international mooting teams.

Teaching & Examinations

GLP students are integrated with the 4-year LL.B. students in all subjects, lectures, tutorials and seminar groups. They also take the same examinations and must meet the same requirements as the 4-year LL.B. students in all subjects.


Degree and Class of Honours

GLP students obtain the same LL.B. (Honours) degree as students who complete the 4-year LL.B. programme. They are also awarded the same classes of honours as the 4-year LL.B. students. With effect from 1997, only graduates holding at least a Second Lower degree are permitted to qualify for legal practice in Singapore.
