Irish Minister Delivers Lecture on Brexit at NUS Law

NUS Law was honoured to host His Excellency Eoghan Murphy, Ireland’s Minister of State for Financial Services, eGovernment, and Public Procurement on 21 September 2016 at the Bukit Timah Campus.

The minister rolled up his sleeves and delivered a lecture titled “From Financial Crisis to Brexit – an Irish Perspective” and took questions from the audience in a Q&A chaired by Yeo Lay Hwee, Director of the European Union Centre in Singapore.

The minister recounted the collapse of the Irish banking system in 2008 and how the country was able to recover from it through the assistance of the International Monetary Fund and the EU. On Brexit, he talked about the structure of the British-EU relationship and posed an interesting question of the inevitability of Britain’s departure because of this. He ended the lecture with his views on the future of the EU and Ireland post-Brexit.

Accompanying the Minister was His Excellency Geoffrey Keating, the Irish Ambassador to Singapore. The Delegation was welcomed by Professor Hans Tjio, Co-Director for the Centre for Banking & Finance Law.
