Welcome to APCEL’s virtual home!

APCEL has a notable heritage. The centre was established in 1996, in cooperation with the World Conservation Union-Commission on Environmental Law (IUCN-CEL) and UNEP, in response to the call in Agenda 21 to build capacity in environmental law and promote environmental consciousness.

The world today faces many environmental challenges, including marine plastics pollution and climate change. However, there are solutions and the law plays a critical role in addressing these critical environmental problems. APCEL has pioneered a wide-ranging programme of teaching, research and outreach to galvanize the use of legal mechanisms to address climate change, biodiversity loss, and plastics pollution, etc. Our current projects include a research project with Melbourne Law School on the use of planning litigation to promote climate change adaptation in Southeast Asia, and the Annotated Bibliography Series. The APCEL Seminar Series brings internationally renowned scholars to our home at the Bukit Timah Campus to share the latest thinking on environmental law and policy.
