• Student Outreach Programme

Deforestation, toxic waste discharges into rivers, and air pollution are just some of the many environmental challenges we face today. We believe that every person has a part to play in protecting our environment. But many people feel that they are “just one person” and what they do as an individual will make no difference.

In creating the first-ever Environmental Law Student Outreach Programme in Singapore, our starting point here at APCEL is to change that attitude because we believe in the power of the individual.

To empower students to understand and think critically about what they can do to protect the environment, APCEL’s Environmental Law Student Outreach Programme aims to introduce pre-tertiary students (from Secondary school onwards) to key ideas and concepts about environmental law.

Our goal is to plant seeds of knowledge and equip the next generation of changemakers to engage with laws and policies to protect our natural world.

During these sessions, APCEL’s legal experts and researchers will address topics such as:

  • What are environmental laws and their principles?
  • How are international environmental laws made and implemented?
  • How are national governments involved in international and national environmental lawmaking?
  • How does science interact with laws?
  • How Singapore is using laws and policies to solve environmental problems?

We invite all interested groups from Secondary schools, Junior Colleges, and Polytechnics to contact us. In the interests of making these workshops accessible to all, these workshops are free.

Each 2.5-hour workshop will be held at the NUS Law Bukit Timah Campus. We accommodate a minimum of 20 students and a maximum of 50 students per session. Transportation will not be provided but chartered buses can drop visitors off at the designated drop-off point. Alternatively, visitors may choose to use public transport: alight at the Botanic Gardens station and take a 10-minute walk through the Gardens.

Refreshments will be provided. All students and teachers are invited to bring their own reusable containers, cutlery, and cups for food and drink. This is in line with our commitment to environmental sustainability; single-use disposable items will not be provided.

For more information and/or to make arrangements for a workshop session, please contact lawapcel@nus.edu.sg.
