Description

This sharing will reflect on two decades of work by the Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (ACRES), which involved efforts to strengthen the legal protection of animals (wild and farmed) through community action, humane education, rescues, policy advocacy, and collaborative partnerships with government agencies and civil society. These reflections will be shared through the lens of Anbu, and her own journey with ACRES, from volunteer to co-CEO (and beyond).

In this session, Anbu will explore how legal and policy instruments can be pivotal tools in advancing animal welfare. The session will highlight key campaigns, challenges in enforcement, and the evolving engagement landscapes, including ACRES’ role in advocating for improved standards, influencing policy, and increasing recognition of animal sentience and welfare domains in national frameworks. Anbu will also reflect on how her lessons from NUS’s Master of Environmental Management (MEM) programme, particularly Environmental Law, helped shaped these efforts by ACRES.
