Carol Yuen at the 21 IUCN-AEL Colloquium

APCEL researcher, Carol Yuen, participated in the 21st Annual Colloquium organised by the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Academy of Environmental Law (IUCN AEL) hosted by the Gujarat National Law University, Gujarat, India, from 3 to 8 July 2024.  The team of this year’s conference was, ‘Mission LiFE: Ensuring Environmental Sustainability & Climate Justice through Community Action” and included teaching and research workshops focused on community capacity-building and community-engaged scholarship methods. The teaching workshop was held at Karnavati University, also in Gujarat.

Carol presented on “ASEAN’s regional efforts in renewable energy” at the Colloquium in a panel themed “International Environmental Policies and Legal Frameworks: Towards Sustainable Development and Biodiversity Conservation”. The panel was chaired by Professor William Piermattei, Managing Director of the Environmental Law Program at the University of Maryland School of Law, Baltimore, United States. Carol’s presentation evaluated current regional efforts in developing renewable energy in ASEAN and how such efforts could be improved, particularly, by expanding the ASEAN Power Grid and attracting investment as a region.

As with other editions, the Colloquium involved environmental law experts from all over the world. There were many opportunities to exchange knowledge and ideas about environmental law and management in various jurisdictions, such as the use of the Ubuntu principles of collective ownership and peaceful coexistence in South African environmental management, and the environmental implications of the use of mosquitofish in India to curb the mosquito population.
