ASEAN Environmental Rights Working Group Meeting 6-8 May 2024, Jakarta, Indonesia

APCEL’s SRF, Dr. Linda Yanti Sulistiawati is a member of the ASEAN Environmental Rights Working group and attended the Working Group’s 4th meeting on 6-8 May, in the ASEAN Secretariat Headquarters, Jakarta, Indonesia.

During the meeting, initial assessment of comments submissions from stakeholders was presented. The meeting discussed a suitable process to consolidate comments for further consideration by the AICHR and ASBs. The Working Group exchanged views on the procedural and substantive elements relevant to the realization of the rights to a safe, clean, healthy and sustainable environment in ASEAN.

The group considered the urgencies to collectively and effectively address climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss. It also took into account the fundamental principles embedded in various ASEAN agreements and international frameworks to which AMSs are party, to strengthen cooperation in protecting all citizens, in particular people in vulnerable situations, from environmental harm, and promoting their right to participate in the decision-making related to environmental matters.
