APCEL’s Senior Research Fellow, Dr Linda Yanti Sulistiawati participated as a panel moderator and speaker at the International Workshop on Policies, Land, and Regulations for Land Management in Asian Countries (4-6 June 2024) organised by Office of the National Land Policy Board (ONLB) and Thailand Science Research and Innovation (TSRI) with the support of Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS).

Attended by over 80 participants with representations from South Korea, Japan, Thailand, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Vietnam, the Conference aimed to provide a platform for sharing knowledge, experiences and lessons learnt in formulating policies, laws and regulations on land and soil management and its challenges in the many jurisdiction of Asia.

In Dr Sulistiawati’s  presentation, ‘the Case Study of Renewable Energy Paradox in Rempang Island’, she discussed the failure of the omnibus law of job creation law 2023 to protect the rights of local communities and indigenous people of Rempang Island, when the central government forcefully relocate them to support the building of an ‘Ecocity’ for a renewable energy project. She demonstrated the dilemmas and conflicts faced by governments to balance between the transition towards land use for renewal energy and existing land use by local communities and indigenous people.
