Sean Tseng, Academic Fellow of APCEL, was invited to speak on a panel at TechLaw.Fest 2023 on the touchpoints amongst ESG, technology and the law.

Sean joined an esteemed panel comprising Terence Chia, Assistant Chief Executive of IMDA, John Leung, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer, CDP and Helge Muenkel, CFA, Chief Sustainability Officer of DBS Bank. The panel was moderated by Joyce A. Tan PBM, Managing Director of Joyce A Tan & Partners LLC. Amongst the moderator and the panellists, the audience was treated to a lively discussion covering a vast array of topics. These included the role technology plays in providing ESG solutions, supporting typically small and under-resourced ESG teams in meeting time-sensitive ESG goals, and what potential ESG issues might be engaged with technology.

Sean discussed several ways in which ESG, technology and the law intersect. For example, climate intelligence data platforms will grow in relevance as sustainability reporting obligations become mandatory. Additionally, emerging machine learning/AI technology could potentially support regulators in identifying greenwashing-related risks in companies, and may form the foundations of fit-for-purpose greenwashing legislation. All these, and more, demonstrate the increasing importance that technology will play in shaping ESG issues and the law.
