Singapore’s New Emission Reduction Target: 45 Million Metric Tons Within 10 Years
Lianhe Zaobao, 11 February 2025
On Monday (February 10), Singapore submitted its 2035 Nationally Determined Contribution to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, confirming that it will strive to reduce carbon emissions to between 45 million tonnes and 50 million tonnes by 2035.
Singapore has committed to reducing emissions to between 45 and 50 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO2e) in 2035 as part of its 2035 Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), which was submitted to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) earlier today. The 2035 NDC builds on its 2030 NDC and paves the way to achieving the nation’s target of net zero emissions by 2050. Singapore was the 12th country to submit a second NDC.
In her interview with Lianhe Zaobao, Associate Professor Jolene Lin, Director of Asia-Pacific Centre for Environmental Law (APCEL) at NUS Law noted that Singapore has given a very comprehensive account of the multi-pronged approach it is taking to promote the decarbonisation process. She also pointed out that Singapore had previously planned to achieve its decarbonisation goals through domestic carbon reduction policies and promote carbon trading as much as possible, but this time it is clear that it will achieve its emission reduction goals through carbon trading.
“I hope that countries will not falter in the wake of the US withdrawal from the Paris Agreement. Together with a few countries demonstrating resolute leadership, we must continue to forge ahead to fight climate change.”
