APCEL HOSTS PROFESSOR DANIEL BODANSKY

October 8, 2022 | In the News

On 6 October 2022, APCEL supported the Centre for International Law (CIL) in hosting a lecture by Professor Daniel Bodansky. Professor Bodansky is a preeminent authority in global climate change and has written extensively on the topic. He has served as climate change coordinator and attorney-advisor for the U.S. Department of State, in addition to consulting for the United Nations on climate change issues. During the lecture lecture, Professor Bodansky reviewed the key stages of development of the UN climate change regime, shared insights on why the climate change issue has been so intractable, and recommended possible international law solutions to address the urgent yet complex problem of climate change. Following his lecture, Professor Bodansky was joined by Dr Linda Yanti Sulistiawati (Senior Research Fellow, APCEL) and Dr Nilüfer Oral (Director, CIL) in a Q&A panel discussion moderated by Danielle Yeow (Adjunct Senior Research Fellow  and Climate Change Law and Policy Lead, CIL). During the Q&A, panellists addressed questions on issues including the progress and challenges of international climate law in Asia, the interdisciplinary nature of the climate change regime, and the role of other stakeholders in solving the problem.

Following the lecture, APCEL hosted a lunch with Professor Bodansky at the centre on 12 October 2022. During this lunch meeting, Professor Bodansky engaged APCEL researchers on issues such as the efficacy of climate change litigation in influencing  national climate action, the role of legal academics in driving and/or shaping the international climate change regime, and potential sticking points to monitor during the upcoming Conference of the Parties (i.e., COP27 in Egypt).
