Anbarasi (Anbu) Boopal is an Adjunct Research Fellow at the Asia-Pacific Centre for Environmental Law (APCEL). She holds master’s degrees in Life Sciences (Biotechnology) from Bharathidasan University, India and in Environmental Management (MEM programme) from the National University of Singapore. Anbu has over 20 years of experience in wildlife and animal protection through her work in India, including serving as the former Co-CEO of ACRES, a Singapore-based animal protection organisation.
Her work in Singapore has spanned advocacy, investigations, enforcement support, legislative and policy reform, research, media engagement and community outreach. She has worked with government agencies and other stakeholders on strengthening animal protection through legislative reforms, consultations, investigations, and research and policy recommendations. Her approach to advocacy combines individual empowerment with addressing the systemic and root causes of animal welfare problems.
Her current work focuses primarily on farmed animal welfare in Southeast Asia. She conducts regional research on farmed animal welfare concerns and potential interventions for an NGO Welfare Matters. At APCEL, her research explores pathways for integrating animal welfare into environmental governance and decision-making in Singapore, with particular interest in procurement, trade and legal recognition of animals.
Anbu is powered by plants and a lot of hope.
