APCEL - Asia-Pacific Centre for Environmental Law

APCEL Visiting Fellowship Programme

The APCEL Visiting Fellowship Programme has been created to provide opportunities for environmental law researchers to come to NUS Law to conduct research and develop their ideas/proposals for tackling the pressing environmental problems we face in the Asia-Pacific region today. These problems include the disruptive effects of climate change, severe biodiversity loss, air pollution and over-fishing, just to name a few.

In line with our mission to build capacity for environmental law in the Asia-Pacific region, only researchers based in this region and whose work focuses on environmental law are invited to apply for this fellowship. Ph.D students in the final year of writing their dissertation, full-time faculty members of universities and researchers in environmental NGOs are welcome to apply.

Each fellowship is for one month in duration.

While at NUS, APCEL Visiting Fellows are expected to conduct research on environmental law issues of interest to their respective countries or to Asia in general. A Visiting Fellow is expected to present a seminar paper during his or her fellowship. In addition, a Fellow may be invited to teach as a guest lecturer in a course or courses offered at NUS Law.

Visiting Fellows are required to be in residence in the Faculty throughout the duration of the fellowship.

Stipend & Benefits

Visiting Fellows will be provided a stipend of SGD2,000 payable at the end of the month-long fellowship. NUS will arrange and pay for the rental cost of suitable housing for single occupancy. The type of housing will vary depending on the accommodation available at the time of the visit and will be determined by NUS. A Visiting Fellow will be reimbursed for a return economy class airfare (by the most economical and direct route) from the city of his/her home institution.

Visiting Fellows will be granted full access to the C J Koh Law Library. Visiting Fellows can also expect to have dedicated work space within a shared office equipped with computers and internet connection. Visiting Fellows will also be invited to all seminars and events held at NUS Law.

Applicants should be aware that living expenses in Singapore are comparable to other major world cities. Fellows should budget to have approximately S$1,000 to S$2,000 per month for their living expenses while in Singapore and ensure they have sufficient financial support or access to their funds for the duration of the fellowship. The stipend will only be disbursed after the fellowship has been completed. Fellows are also advised to arrange for their own insurance prior to arrival. The fellowship does not include medical/dental and travel insurance.
