[CALS] Beyond Mandatory Pro Bono: Compulsory Lawyer Mechanisms in Access to Justice
December 9, 2024
On 5-6 December 2024, CALS hosted a symposium on “Beyond Mandatory Pro Bono: Compulsory Lawyer Mechanisms in Access to Justice” at NUS Law’s Bukit Timah Campus. Convened by Associate Professor Helena Whalen-Bridge, the event explored the various compulsory mechanisms jurisdictions impose on lawyers in access to justice, such as mandatory court appointments and mandatory paid legal aid. Scholars and practitioners gathered to map these mechanisms, analyse their role in enhancing access to justice, and theorize their broader purposes within different jurisdictions.
