February 7, 2025

On 7 February 2025, the Centre for Asian Legal Studies (CALS) at the National University of Singapore hosted a Zoom webinar titled “Teaching and Researching Law in Bhutan: A New Frontier.” The session featured insights from Professor Stanley Yeo (NUS), and included contributions from Associate Professor Helena Whalen-Bridge (NUS) and Professor Umakanth Varottil (NUS).

Professor Yeo shared his experiences teaching at JSW Law, Bhutan’s sole national law school, highlighting its integration of Bhutanese values like gross national happiness and environmental sustainability into the curriculum. The webinar also discussed the rewarding opportunities for engaging with Bhutanese law’s rapid development, emphasizing the effectiveness of the comparative legal method for legal immersion. The session concluded with an interactive Q&A segment.
