CAPPLI 2026: New Project, New Friends

September 12, 2025 | Programmes

On 12 September 2025, six students from the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore (NUS) and eight law students from the School of Law, Peking University (PKU) came together virtually for the first time as part of the Centre for Asian Legal Studies – Peking University School of Law Peer Learning Initiative (CAPPLI). CAPPLI was established earlier this year, in June, as the third iteration of the Centre for Asian Legal Studies Peer Learning Initiative (CAPLI).

The session was a warm, interactive “Meet & Mingle” session designed to kickstart cross-border friendships and knowledge exchange. Facilitated by Lim Xin Yi (NUS LLB ’26), Chen Zheng En (NUS LLB ’27), and Sonia Ling (PKU), the session offered an informal space for participants to introduce themselves, share their interests, discover common passions beyond the classroom, and look forward to collaboration between the two schools for the year ahead.

The session began with a round of self-introductions. Participants excitedly shared their areas of legal interest, hobbies ranging from playing musical instruments to exploring local cuisine, and what they hoped to gain from participating in CAPPLI 2026.

The highlight of the evening was a lively game of “2 Truths & 1 Lie”, which kept everyone laughing for the majority of the hour. Memorable moments included the revelation that one PKU participant was merely 18 years old – shocking all of her peers when they learned she had undertaken the infamously daunting Gaokao (高考) at just 16! Another participant’s confession about sleeping an average of 10 hours every night almost convinced everyone it was a “lie”. After all, who would imagine a law student enjoying such luxuries? The icebreaker fostered curiosity, laughter, and genuine connection, allowing students to bond over quirky facts, shared experiences, and surprising talents.

The session concluded with a quick group photo and a brief reflection segment, where students shared their favourite moments and expressed enthusiasm for the forthcoming CAPPLI 2026 activities. By fostering informal connections early on, the “Meet & Mingle” session helped lay the groundwork for the programme’s long-term goal of promoting direct knowledge exchange and academic collaboration between NUS and PKU law students. Participants left the session excited for the inaugural reciprocal workshop scheduled for Saturday, 28 February 2026, when PKU students will visit Singapore and NUS Law, and for the opportunity for our students to visit Beijing and PKU Law School in May 2026, continuing the exchange and deepening cross-border friendships.

CAPPLI 2026 is off to a fantastic start, proving that even online, cross-border friendships and learning can flourish – one quirky fact at a time!
