Third World Approach to International Law

On 3 November 2014, Professor M Sornarajah and Professor Tony Anghie conducted a seminar on “Third World Approach to International Law”. Moderated by NUS Law Dean, Simon Chesterman, the seminar was held at the Lee Sheridan Conference Room, NUS Bukit Timah Campus.

The premise of the seminar was that scholars from the Third World have sought over many decades to develop a vision of international law that would promote the interests of Third World peoples. The panel at the event discussed this tradition, its characteristics and evolution, and the challenges it confronts in the context of contemporary events such as the Global Financial Crisis, the War on Terror and the emergence of the BRICs.

Organised by Centre for Asian Legal Studies (CALS), the talk was attended by over 60 participants, including faculty members and students.

Professor M Sornarajah is a CJ Koh Professor at NUS Law and a Visiting Professor at the Centre for the Study of Human Rights at the LSE. Professor Tony Anghie is a Samuel D. Thurman Professor of Law at the University of Utah and a Visiting Professor at NUS Law 2014-2015.
