[CALS-CIL] International Law in Asia Speaker Series: “Critical Reflections on International Law, Justice, and the Global South”

November 9, 2023 | Programmes

The Centre for Asian and Legal Studies (CALS) hosted the inaugural International Law in Asia (ILA)  Speaker series with a Zoom webinar on, “Critical Reflections on International Law, Justice, and the Global South “ on 8 November 2023. Conducted in collaboration with Centre for International Law (CIL), our distinguished speakers, Dr Nilufer Oral (CIL)  and Judge Raul Pangalangan (ICC), delved into the challenges faced by the Global South within international law, discussing inclusivity, equity, and the role of institutions like the International Criminal Court and the International Law Commission. The webinar was well received with lively engagement from our participants. The discussion fostered invaluable dialogue, offering a deeper understanding of international law’s impact on justice and equity in the Global South.  The event was moderated by ILA Cluster Co-ordinator, Associate Professor Cheah W.L., with welcome remarks given by the Deputy Director of CALS, Associate Professor Christian Hofmann.

The International Law in Asia Cluster aims to generate cutting-edge international law research and knowledge by facilitating exchange and collaboration among NUS researchers and the larger international law community. It aims to be an inclusive forum for the discussion of international law issues, particularly in the Asian context, among international law researchers, practitioners, and policymakers. The cluster’s activities will draw on the NUS Law Faculty’s expertise across public and private international law in pursuing the study of significant and timely issues within these areas of international law as well as between them. It intends to function as a hub that brings together and showcases the NUS Law Faculty’s international law research and collaboration with other international law actors.
