Description

In the past decade, Asia has transformed into one of the most economically and socially dynamic regions in the world. Law has been a key, though not only, factor in this transformation. There is need to study and critique this legal project contextually so as to identify its deficiencies, gaps, and prospects for reform in a manner that takes into account the distinctive social, economic, and political conditions of each country.

The Centre for Asian Legal Studies (CALS) has been taking the lead in defining, articulating, and critiquing this legal project. In conjunction with the 10th year since its establishment as part of NUS Law’s strategic positioning as Asia’s Global Law School, CALS is organizing a one-day conference to reflect on the past, present, and future of Asian legal studies in three areas of law: private law, public law, and commercial law. Speakers will offer their insights on key legal developments in Asia, identify points of convergence and divergence, and reflect upon future trajectories for scholarly dialogue and legal exchange in the region.
