Description

Introducing Virtual Roundtables on Asian Law: a new online series by the Centre for Asian Legal Studies (CALS). As social gatherings, physical classes, and in-person seminars are put on hold, the loss of human interaction has been one of the most difficult aspects of our collective response to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the current disruption is also an opportunity and a call to adapt, to make our programmes more accessible, engaging, and flexible. The series is CALS’ response to this call.

This Virtual Roundtables series will bring together legal experts to share critical perspectives on topical issues on law in Asia in an online interactive format.

As CALS Director, Associate Professor Jaclyn Neo, put it, “With the closing of borders due to the outbreak, it might, at times, seem that our world is being drawn further apart. However, we have at our disposal today the technology to counteract these centrifugal forces and to remain intellectually connected. This is why CALS is launching this series as its primary online platform to host pivotal discussions on law in Asia. It is part of CALS’ continuing efforts to be even more resilient in supporting academic research and expanding our collaborative networks on Asian law in the face of global disruptions.”

The series aims to connect academics, public officers, members of civil society, and legal practitioners from anywhere in the world who are interested in gaining deeper knowledge of Asian approaches to various legal issues.

The first set of roundtables will focus on selected issues arising from Asian responses to the COVID-19 outbreak.
