[CALS] Book Talk: “High Wire: How China Regulates Big Tech and Governs Its Economy”
On 19 March 2024, the Centre for Asian Legal Studies (CALS) hosted Associate Professor Angela Zhang Huyue, from the University of Hong Kong, discussing her latest publication, “High Wire: How China Regulates Big Tech and Governs Its Economy”. In this talk, she drew upon insights from her book, and discussed the multifaceted nature of China’s institutional dynamics and its impact on AI regulation. She provided an analysis of the Chinese government’s nuanced strategy to leverage the expressive power of the law to strategically enable the growth of its AI industry. She provided an insightful evaluation and perspective on China’s approach to AI enforcement, and discussed the implications of it on the global and domestic tech industry. The session came to a close with questions from the participants inviting her to provide insight on the prospects of international cooperation. This session was moderated by Associate Professor Lin Lin (National University of Singapore).
