[CALS] CAPPLI Reciprocal Workshop 2026: An Introduction to the Basics of Chinese Corporate Law

The Centre for Asian Legal Studies – Peking University School of Law Peer Learning Initiative (“CAPPLI”) recently concluded its inaugural reciprocal workshop titled “An Introduction to the Basics of Chinese Corporate Law”. CAPPLI is the third project under the Centre’s flagship initiative, the Centre for Asian Legal Studies Peer Learning Initiative, and was started in 2025.

The workshop comprised three sessions. The first, held online on Saturday, 21 February 2026, introduced 47 Singaporean law students to China’s legal system and the doctrine of horizontal veil piercing. The second and third sessions took place in person on Saturday, 28 February 2026 at the National University of Singapore’s Kent Ridge Campus, with each session seeing a high turnout. The second session examined shareholders’ remedies under Chinese law, while the third provided a brief introduction to Chinese insolvency law. Across all three sessions, students from Singapore’s three local law schools – NUS, SMU, and SUSS – actively engaged with their Chinese tutors.

An opening ceremony preceded the second session. It was graced by Assistant Professor Dian Shah (Deputy Director, Centre for Asian Legal Studies) who emphasised the importance of cross-border discussions. The Project Director of the PKU team, Sonia Ling, also highlighted the unique opportunities presented by CAPPLI in providing a platform for comparative discussions to happen at the student level. Rie Hong, one of the Project Directors of the NUS team, expressed similar sentiments, as she commented that the value of CAPPLI went beyond academic discussions to building a regional network of acquaintances.

The lectures concluded with a lively series of quizzes and hypotheticals that required full participation from the audience. Following the conclusion of the third session, students also had the opportunity to informally chat with their Chinese peer tutors, reinforcing CAPPLI’s core mission to build a platform on which cross-border acquaintances can be formed.
