[CALS] CAUPLI Reciprocal Workshop 2024

October 3, 2024

The Centre for Asian Legal Studies (CALS) at the National University of Singapore, Faculty of Law, and Universitas Gadjah Mada Fakultas Hukum (UGM) have concluded the inaugural reciprocal workshop on Indonesian Company Law!  The workshop is part of CALS’ newest peer learning initiative – the CALS-UGM Peer Learning Initiative (CAUPLI).

The three-part workshop was held on 7, 14 and 21 September, and was conducted by six peer tutors from UGM. The peer tutors paired up to conduct two-hour lectures introducing students to Indonesia’s legal system, unique two-tier board system, as well as dissolution and corporate bankruptcy laws. The Singaporean students were also given the opportunity to probe deeper and engage with peers from UGM on interesting points of law through the Q&A segment after the lectures. The workshop drew 47 students from various institutions including NUS Law, SUSS Law, NUS Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National Junior College and NUS High School of Math and Science.

The students found the workshop to be enriching and complementary to knowledge learnt in school. Reflecting on his experience attending the sessions, Xu Chong, a third-year student at NUS Law shared: “CAUPLI has been a fantastic opportunity for cultural and academic exchange. It gave me the chance to lift the veil of semantical differences and discover the common structure that undergird the corporate worlds of two countries.”

The workshop is part of CALS’ initiative to heighten appreciation for the civil law tradition in the distinctive context of countries in the region. Since the project’s inception in 2022, which started in partnership with Thammasat University Faculty of Law in Thailand (CATPLI), the project has now expanded to the shores of the Special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Following three successful runs of CATPLI, CALS is now thrilled to partner with UGM on the first edition of CAUPLI. As part of the exchange of knowledge between law students from UGM and NUS, a team of NUS Law students has travelled to Yogyakarta, Indonesia, to run a further in-person workshop entitled “An Introduction to the Basics of Singapore Company Law”. Their trip will be covered in another media update, so stay tuned!
