On 24 January 2024, the Centre for International Law (CIL) and Centre for Asian Legal Studies (CALS) collaboratively hosted a lecture featuring Professor José E Alvarez, who presented insights from his latest book on gender equality and property rights. Dr Cheah W.L. welcomed attendees and introduced Professor Alvarez’s presentation, delving into the profound gender gap in wealth and property. The lecture explored the unique vision of property rights for women outlined by the Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). The lecture included valuable commentary and a subsequent panel discussion with Dr Nilüfer Oral and Dr Jaclyn Neo, with Dr Cheah W.L. as moderator, offering diverse perspectives on the book’s implications.
